Help › Mail

Search your email, and choose where to look

Open this in Talisk HQ

Click the search button at the top of the email list, or press /, and type. Results appear as you type.

Search for a person

Type two or more letters of someone's name or address. Under the search box, People lists the people you email who match, with their address and how many emails you have with them.

Each person has a With, From and To switch:

  • With: mail between you and them, in either direction.
  • From: only mail they sent.
  • To: only mail sent to them, with them on the To or Cc line.

Click a person, or press Enter, to search their mail. Enter picks With; press the left and right arrow keys first to pick From or To, and the up and down arrow keys to move between people. The last line, Search all mail for the word, searches the letters you typed as an ordinary word instead.

The person becomes a tag in the search box, showing the choice and their name. Click the tag to switch between With, From and To, or to remove it. Words you type after the tag narrow the results to that person's emails containing them.

A person search matches their exact email address, so a message that only mentions them is not included. It looks in all your connected mailboxes at once: a line above the results says how many emails were found, the date of the newest, and which mailboxes they came from. To look in one mailbox only, click All mailboxes under the search box and pick it.

The results are one list, newest first. An arrow beside each one shows which way it went: from them to you, or from you to them. An email you sent is named by who it went to, so it reads To and their name rather than your own.

Where TALISK_HQ looks

Every search starts in Inbox only: the emails in your inbox, including the Filtered and Snoozed tabs. Archived mail, Trash and Spam are left out.

To look further, click Inbox only under the search box and pick:

  • Inbox and archive: everything except Trash and Spam.
  • Everywhere: includes Trash and Spam.
  • Sent: only mail you sent.
  • One folder or label…: one of your mailbox's own folders or labels.

Under the results, TALISK_HQ says where it did not look, with a button to look one step wider: Include archived mail from Inbox only, and Search everywhere from anywhere else.

A search for a person starts in Inbox and archive instead, so the emails you sent them are included.

The choice goes back to Inbox only each time you close search. When another part of TALISK_HQ opens a search for you, such as an email the assistant found or a supplier's emails from a bill, it looks in Inbox and archive instead.

Narrow the results

  • Any date: a recent period, or a custom range.
  • Has attachment, Unread and Starred: switch on any of them. They work together with any of the places above.

Reading the results

When you search more than one place and the results come from more than one of them, they are grouped under Inbox, Sent, Archived and Trash and spam. A message you sent is always listed under Sent. When you pick one place, such as Sent, the results are one list, newest first. A result you sent shows who it went to, not your own name. An archived, deleted or spam result also carries a tag saying so, and its buttons match where it lives: a deleted email offers Restore and Delete forever.

Archiving, deleting or moving a result takes it out of the list straight away, with Undo. Search again to see it in its new place.

When there are many results, a Search older mail button at the bottom asks your email provider for matches TALISK_HQ has not synced yet.

On the phone, search is on the Inbox screen and offers the same choices, including searching for a person.

Good to know: A word search looks in the mailbox you are viewing. A search for a person looks in every connected mailbox unless you pick one. Search finds mail Talisk has synced, and Search older mail asks your email provider for anything else. Searching never changes an email.
